The Next Chapter
Retirement for today’s baby boomers is not about sitting on the porch. You are going to be sitting on the porch for 30 yrs. Retirement for us is the NEXT CHAPTER. What are you going to do with the next thirty years of your life? Here are some examples of what others have done after retirement:
Norman was a science teacher when he worked for Dallas ISD. After retiring, he got a job at the Science Place and now gets to enjoy the fun part of teaching. He does lab experiments and trials with students without the hassle of lesson plans or grading.
Wendy developed a learning carpet while she was teaching to help her students understand the material she was presenting. After retirement, she started her own business and now sells these carpets to educators across the country (see link). She and her husband Ron get to travel the country while promoting the carpet.
Claire always had an interest in gardening. When she retired from teaching, she got a job at a local greenhouse. The greenhouse paid for her to take educational and training classes to further her knowledge with plants and flowers. She eventually became the manager of the store and now spends her time making a living with her hobby while depositing $22,500 into the greenhouse’s 401k!
Jan retired from the teacher retirement system and decided to go back to school. She took a two-year course in goldsmithing. Now she designs, creates, and sells her own jewelry. She gets to spend her days surrounded by her passion and is able to continue to save for retirement!
